For most people, 8GB of real RAM is still enough for everyday Android use in 2026: messaging, social media, browsing, maps, camera and normal multitasking should be comfortable on a well-optimized phone.
I would move to 12GB if you keep many heavy apps alive, play demanding games, use desktop-style multitasking, edit video on the phone, or plan to keep the device for several years and want more headroom for future features.
Do not let “virtual RAM” influence the decision much; storage used as memory is not a substitute for physical RAM. Also consider the chipset and software optimization. A well-optimized 8GB phone can feel smoother than a poorly optimized 12GB one. For a normal buyer, I would prioritize 256GB storage before paying a large premium only to move from 8GB to 12GB RAM.
