Buying Advice

Is 256GB enough for a phone you plan to keep until 2030?

Community Member

Storage is becoming a long-term buying decision because many new phones no longer have microSD expansion. If you are buying a phone in 2026 and plan to keep it for four or five years, is 256GB still the sensible sweet spot—or would you choose 512GB now? Please mention how much storage you currently use and what fills it: photos, 4K video, WhatsApp media, offline music, large games, work files or app caches. Cloud storage also changes the answer, so say whether you regularly offload photos and videos. People who started with 128GB or 256GB several years ago: did your storage needs grow faster than expected?

256GB can be plenty, but the useful way to decide is to project from your own usage instead of choosing a universal minimum.

Check how much storage you use today. If you are well below 100GB, regularly offload media and do not keep several huge games, 256GB leaves substantial headroom. If you already sit around 150–200GB, shoot lots of high-resolution video, download media for travel or keep large games installed, 512GB is easier to justify for a four- or five-year ownership cycle.

Also remember that system/app storage grows over time and there is no upgrade path later on phones without expandable storage.

Post your current used storage + phone age. That will let us build a much more realistic picture of how storage needs grow.
